The series originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive the series with a television film. However the series was finally relaunched in 2005 by Russell T Davies. Throughout it's original run and the relaunched series, Doctor Who has spawned many spin-offs. For example Torchwood, which is aimed at an older audience than Doctor Who. Torchwood features the character of Captain Jack Harkness, portrayed by John Barrowman who was originally introduced in the Doctor Who episode 'The Empty Child. Torchwood has so far had four series, most recently 'Miracle Day'. Another spin-off from Doctor Who is The Sarah Jane Adventures which features Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen, who was the companion of both the third and fourth doctors and also appeared in an episode of the relaunched series. The Sarah Jane Adventures ran for four full series and a fith series was produced and three episodes broadcast before Elisabeth Sladen sadly passed away. It has been stated that there will not be any more episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventure. Other television spinoffs include Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest, Tardisodes and Totally Doctor Who.
